Researchers Are Pretty Sure They've Found A New Planet In Our Solar System

Researchers are now quite confident that there is a ninth planet in the solar system.

Konstantin and Mike Brown Batygin two CalTech scientists say the new planet is about 10 times the mass of Earth and has an atmosphere of hydrogen and helium. The journal Science reports that the mysterious “Planet X” is moving in a distant orbit beyond Neptune.

The researchers observed no Planet X itself, but I think for the beautiful setting of six objects when they come closer to the sun, according to Science.

Scientists say there is a probability of 0.007 percent configuration due to chance, and instead are sure to be a ninth planet. They believe that they will observe the planet with a telescope within five years, according to the Associated Press.

So this planet is possible? Previously, scientists have speculated that there might be a lost planet in our solar system, with some of the theory that a collision caused to be ejected out of our system about 4 million years ago. This collision may have been Jupiter.

“Although initially quite skeptical that this planet could exist as we investigated its orbit and what it means for the outer solar system, we become increasingly convinced that it is out there,” Batygin said in a statement. “There is strong evidence that the solar system planetary census is incomplete.”

Batygin and Brown described their findings in The Astronomical Journal on Wednesday.

The discovery is the second time Brown has reformed the way we think about the solar system. In 2005, he made a key discovery led scientists to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet. In a statement Wednesday, Brown – whose Twitter handle éplutokiller – alluded to his role in obtaining Pluto demoted, and said the new finding was 5,000 times the mass of Pluto and certainly was a planet.

“All those people who are mad that Pluto is not a planet can be very happy to know that there is a real world out there still has not been found,” he said.
