Tuesday is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s
The company said it is a way to thank its fans.
“Our clients are incredibly loyal and share our values on important issues such as matrimonial equality, climate change and racial justice,” said Jostein Solheim, CEO of the company. “With the power of ice cream, we are able to form strong connections and create positive social change together. Free Cone Day is a way to show our fans how much we appreciate them.”
The tradition began on May 5, 1979 to show customers and appreciation of staff for supporting the ice cream shop in its first year. At that time, Ben & Jerry operated out of a refurbished gas station in Burlington, Vt. The tradition has continued. Today is the 38th Annual Free Cone. Free ice cream comes with long lines. The company anticipates giving away more than a million tablespoons on Tuesday. The company suggests people spend time online thinking about new ice cream to try. Customers can get online an unlimited number of times.
The company introduced three new flavors this year: Urban Bourbon, Braised Oats and Kerfuffle Truffle. Ben and Jerry are also experimenting with ice cream that has the taste of milk in the bottom of a bowl of cereal. They are called Cereal Splashbacks and include Fruit Loot, Frozen Flakes and Cocoa Loco.
